What is a Normal Healthy Spine?

A normal spine should appear straight when viewed from the back with the upper body directly above the waist and aligned in balance with the feet. When viewed from the side the spine is made up of 3 smooth curves, where the neck curves inwards, the upper and mid-back curves backwards and the lower back curves inwards forming an s-shaped appearance. These three curves should normally sit directly above each other, so that the spine can act like a spring to help absorb and distribute the body weight equally and evenly down the spine.

What is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a 3D spine deformity causing abnormal twists and side curves. This can lead to uneven shoulders, protruding ribs on one side, an uneven waistline, and poorly fitting clothes. From the side, the spine may lose its natural S-shape, making the mid-back look flat and the shoulder blades more prominent. Scoliosis alters posture, straining the spine, causing back pain, and affecting appearance. It can affect any age but usually begins in children aged 10 to 15. The cause is unknown, so it's called idiopathic scoliosis. If untreated, it can worsen, leading to chronic back pain, disability, reduced quality of life, risk of falls, fractures, and poor heart and lung function. It may also impact children's sports participation and self-esteem. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial, especially in young patients whose spines are still flexible and growing.

Types of scoliosis

Whether you are young or an adult, the earlier scoliosis is detected the more effective treatment will be, helping to reduce the potential risk for progression and the need for surgery.

How common is scoliosis?

The prevalence of scoliosis increases with increasing age where 3 to 5% of children under the age of 16 years are affected, that is approximately one student in each class at school. About 5% of the over 18-year-olds are affected, 9% in the over 40-year-olds and about 30%+ in the over 60-year-olds suffer from scoliosis.

Adult scoliosis

Back pain is a significant issue for many adult scoliosis patients. Pain is usually located at the site of the curve; nearby muscles may also feel sore and tender. Pain is usually worse when sitting or standing and improves when laying down, however, in other cases pain could be constant and not depend upon position and could travel from the spine into the hips, legs or less commonly the arms. Other concerns of scoliosis in adults include significant postural changes and curve progression. Research has shown that, pain is related to changes in posture and spinal alignment. Therefore, addressing these two can significantly improve pain. Our fundamental principle at Reliable Spine is to manage PAIN, correct POOR POSTURE and stop or reduce CURVE PROGRESSION. This is achieved by improving the patient’s posture, coronal (when being looked at from the side) and sagittal (when being looked at from the front) balance.

How is scoliosis treated?

Whether you are young or an adult, the earlier scoliosis is detected the more effective treatment will be, helping to reduce the potential risk for progression and the need for surgery.
